Red Brain, Blue Brain: Evaluative Processes Differ in Democrats and Republicans. PLoS One. 2013;8(2):e52970

The study by Schreiber et al. (2013) investigated whether there are differences in brain activity between supporters of the Democratic and Republican parties in the USA.

The results showed that different brain regions were active when making political decisions, depending on the political orientation. Democrats showed increased activity in the anterior cingulate cortex, a brain region involved in processing conflict and monitoring mistakes. Republicans, on the other hand, showed increased activity in the right dorsal prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with risk-reward processing.

However, the authors emphasize that differences in brain activity do not necessarily play a causal role in the emergence of political beliefs and behavior. It cannot be ruled out that the differences in brain activity are due to different experiences and environmental factors related to political orientation.
