Political action in both senses of the word

Political action in the double sense of the word

Political decision-making part 2

(Carsten Willer)

For us in the German-speaking world, selling and buying means acting (act and trade) in a double sense of the word - first, as much as negotiating, interacting with each other, and second, as much as doing something, i.e. becoming active. When we speak of action in the following, we always mean both.

Because both presuppose permanent decision-making processes. It does not matter at all whether we are dealing with everyday decisions in personal life, with the initiation of purchasing decisions, or with political decisions in connection with the formation of political will or personal world view.

Negotiation always takes place between two opposing poles and entails the resulting action: the decision for or against a partner, a job, a way of life or a purchase decision, an election decision, a decision to become politically active is always determined.

With purchase or election decisions, we at least have the feeling that we can make a conscious, self-determined decision. We succumb to the illusion of having everything under control and being able to consciously control our self-determined actions.

When it comes to the formation of political will, be it the development of our own worldview or the processing of the political communication that affects us on a daily basis, we are already more willing to reduce our willful influence.

In these processes, our consciousness has only "the role of the press spokesman," as Daniel Kahneman once put it. The conscious mind only announces what the subconscious mind has processed, analyzed and decided.

Ergo: In the formation of political will, we have almost no conscious access at all to the processes that take place in the subconscious. All political decisions and actions of people are determined.
